Spelt Nutritional Benefits

Like all grains left to themselves, Spelt has a lot of really great health benefits. It’s a rich source of fiber, magnesium, niacin and contributes 28% of our daily value of phosphorus (For a half cup of the berries uncooked). Phosphorus is useful in so many places in the body especially the bones and teeth. Spelt also contains a lot of mucopolysaccharides. These help the body with blood clotting and also stimulate the immune system. The nutrients found in Spelt are very accessible because it dissolves easily in water.

Health Benefits:

One good way to look at the healthiness of a food is to think about what diseases can be prevented by incorporating it into our diet. Due to its rich nutrient content, spelt also has an impressive resume as far as illness prevention goes.

  • Prevents Cardiovascular problems – The presence of Niacin in Spelt is what makes it so powerful against the cardiovascular risk factors. Niacin reduces cholesterol and lipoproteins. In sufficient quantities, it can help prevent atherosclerosis which is a hardening and narrowing of the arteries. The high fiber content also helps eliminate LDL (bad cholesterol).
  • Prevents Type 2 Diabetes – Spelt contains a very large amount of magnesium which is a cofactor for a few enzymes in the body. It has an important function in the secretion of glucose. In this way, spelt helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Prevents Gallstones – Spelt is rich in fiber which helps clean things out of the body. This reduces the development of gallstones. This is especially good news for women as trouble with gallstones is most common in females.
  • Prevents Breast Cancer – Spelt contains a lot of plant lignans which are a kind of photonutrient that helps a lot with breast cancer and other cancers related to hormones.
  • Prevents Gluten issues – Spelt is NOT for those with celiac disease, but it can be great for people with different wheat-related problems or mild gluten-intolerance.
  • Miscellaneous – There is also research to suggest that spelt can help prevent childhood asthma, ischemic stroke, insulin resistance, and obesity.

    1. Hi Kristin, we are currently focusing on einkorn and not as much on the other grains. For the forseeable future, you’ll want to look elsewhere for spelt. I don’t know what you have locally, but there are many good sources online you can look through.
